Fernando Portillo started his trucking company in Dallas in 1992 after he had been laid off as a cafeteria worker. He decided to purchase a 1987 Mack Tandem with his savings, and after operating it for 2 years, aspired to grow his company with the help of his oldest son, Roger Portillo. After lots of hard work and dedication, they earned enough money to purchase a second truck in 1994.

Slowly but surely, his family-owned trucking company grew. By 2000, the company’s truck fleet had grown to 15 units with trailers. A few years later, his youngest son, Jesse Portillo, also became involved with the trucking business. He brought with him years of experience gained in the private sector after serving 10 years in the military and earning a Bachelor’s degree from SMU.

In 2014, the company gained another partner when brother Jose Salvador Portillo also joined the team. He previously worked in the financial sector and brought 15 years of experience in sales, proving to be a valuable member of the team. He is currently our Field Operations Manager and Outside Sales.

In 2017, we gained another valuable member of the team. After serving His country during Operation Inherent Resolve, he was honorably discharged from the Army and came to work with the company, currently in training as dispatch.

Our admin team of Kristin Amaya and Office Manager Vickie Portillo make it possible to do what we do out in the field.

From the beginning, Fernando set out to uphold the strong values of safety, reliability, and community in his company. Even after Fernando’s passing in 2014, these values continue today, with Jesse as Managing Partner and Roger undertaking Operations.

Since 2014, the company has seen tremendous growth in many aspects, such as expanding its services, increasing its revenue, and creating employment opportunities in the DFW area. Portillo and Sons has grown its operations from 8 trucks to more than 50 units and an additional 100 sub-contractors, offering services such as sludge haulers, dirt haulers, aggregate haulers and more. As customers’ needs have grown, the depth of our services have also evolved to match these needs, with the notable additions of inspection stations, petroleum services, and fuel haulers in 2016 and 2017. To support the expanded services and continued growth, Portillo and Sons has nearly quadrupled its workforce, employing about 50 personnel and support staff of diverse backgrounds, many of whom are veterans and minorities. As a family-centric trucking company, Portillo and Sons is officially recognized as both minority-owned and veteran-owned by the State of Texas, opening up tremendous opportunities to their business and the community they serve. They have a strong connection to the veteran community by hiring veterans, donating to local veteran groups, and offering discounted services to them and their companies.
